On Sunday 14th February 13 athletes, fresh from the carnage of BUCS XC, donned the EUAC vest once more and headed on a date with the cross country field. Held at Stover School, a short bus drive from home ground, this was the penultimate round of the Westward League. Though considerably drier than last year the course remained just as challenging, with a woodland descent and a long uphill slog.
In typical XC style, the ladies took to the floor first, churning up the mud for the later men's race. Nikita Steiner put her training into practice, and three energy drinks to good use, powering her way through the mud and finishing in a respectable 24th for the ladies. She was backed up by Penny Oliver, Eliza Gilchrist and Daniela Nolan, while Kitty Taylor put in a great race, and her debut XC performance.
The Men's race started calmly, a walk in the park in comparison to the stampede of the BUCS Men's B team race the previous weekend. However, our team remained strong with 8 fierce competitors prepared for the churned up mud of the Stover course. Phil Bridge, Zach Nolan and Jordan Clay (Jordan running under rogue colours for Cornwall AC) came home in 5th,6th, and 14th place, and were supported solidly by Ben Holmes, Sam Peters, Joachim Tranvag, Ben Hartford and Dan Cryson.
While the Ladies team managed to hold onto a great 2nd place in the overall league rankings, the Mens team slipped into 4th position. However, with one final race at Redruth next month, the battle is far from over and the competition is still very much on!
